At Merci Tattoo we are committed to addressing the long and persistent anti-Black history that is embedded in westernized tattoo practices. It is important to recognize that the origins of tattooing are far from the white washed spaces we see today in America and through our Instagram feeds. We honor and uplift the deep roots of tattooing that are sacred to indigenous cultures.
Our shop believes we all have a role to play in helping dismantle this systemic exclusion that has gone on for far too long. It is our goal to offer intentional and increased access to the Black community as a part of our work as tattoo artists.
As we enter into this commitment, we understand that this must be a continuous and active practice. We also know this will not transform the conditions for Black people in the Twin Cities. Rather, we see this as the first steps of getting into the practice of using our access to make our corner of tattooing less harmful for Black folks.
We are grateful to the Black community in many ways. Especially to those who continue to extend vulnerability and trust with us on this journey!
Thanks to Stacy Wells, Tann @inkthediaspora, @junauda and @justin__universe for trainings and conversations.
